A GORE-TEX jacket is a waterproof, windproof and breathable outerwear garment made with a synthetic fabric called GORE-TEX. Is GORE-TEX 100% waterproof?

GORE-TEX fabric is not 100% waterproof in all situations, although it comes very close under most conditions. Here's why: While the pores in a GORE-TEX jacket are much smaller than raindrops, under extreme pressure or prolonged exposure to heavy rain, water molecules can force their way through. A crucial factor for waterproofness is the durable water repellent (DWR) coating on the outer fabric. It causes water to bead up and roll off, but over time the DWR can degrade, reducing its effectiveness. Even with a high-quality coating, water can potentially seep through if the jacket's seams aren't fully sealed.

Does GORE-TEX stop being waterproof?

The water resistance of GORE-TEX doesn't completely disappear, but it can decrease over time due to two main factors. First, the water-repellent coating that helps water bead up and roll off the fabric of a GORE-TEX jacket can degrade over time. The coating may wear down through regular use and exposure to dirt, detergents and even air pollution. Second, the fabric itself can wear and tear over time, creating tiny holes that allow water to penetrate. This can happen from snags on branches, rubbing against rocks or just normal wear and tear from everyday use.
